  • How do I protect my organisation from malicious cyber attacks in the future?
  • How can I reduce the vulnerability of my organisation, both efficiently and economically?

What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed, industry-supported initiative to provide organisations within and supplying to the public sector with a way of proving that they have a basic level of cyber security controls in place. This was undertaken for two main reasons:

  • so companies and their owners understood the basic principles of cyber security
  • to show customers, investors and others that those companies have taken basic precautions against cyber attacks

Recently, Cyber Essentials certification has become extremely crucial for buyers within the public sector.

The cyber-attacks that have occurred throughout 2017 have underlined just how under-prepared even large organisations are to deal with these threats. As the WannaCry ransomware attack shows, the public sector is not immune from cyber attack – the NHS was the worst hit out of all the organisations targeted.

It is essential that public sector organisations take not only precautions but the right precautions to protect themselves against cyber attack – which is where Cyber Essentials can help.

How can you protect yourself?

Being certified compliant with Cyber Essentials demonstrates to your clients and industry partners that your organisation holds itself to a high standard of cyber security, and that you maintain a strict stance on cyber security in accordance with the UK’s National Cyber Security Programme.

Based on the Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2017*, only one in ten organisations have a cyber security incident management plan in place despite just under half (46%) of all UK business identifying at least one cyber security breach or attack in the last 12 months. The report also highlighted that around 13% of UK business are attacked daily and this is more prevalent where the core business functionality is not online focused – as is the case for many public sector organisations.

It is also estimated that security breaches will continue to increase in the next year. The survey found that 59% of respondents expected to see more security incidents. Public sector bodies need to ensure their defences keep pace with the threat.

So, if you haven’t already joined the Cyber Essentials scheme, then now is the time to do so.
