What is Cyber Essentials?

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed, industry-supported initiative to provide organisations within and supplying to the public sector with a way of proving that they have a basic level of cyber security controls in place. This initiative was undertaken for two main reasons:

Recently, Cyber Essentials certification has become extremely important for buyers within the public sector too.

A number of high-profile cyber attacks that have occurred in recent years have demonstrated just how under-prepared even large organisations often are to deal with these threats. The WannaCry ransomware attack of May 2017 in particular showed just how exposed UK public sector bodies are to newer, more sophisticated cyber attacks – the NHS was the worst hit out of all the organisations targeted worldwide.

It has been predicted that such attacks will continue, with the head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre stating that a major cyber attack on the UK is a matter of “when, not if”.

How Can You
Protect Yourself?

In the National Cyber Security Strategy (2016-2021) released by the UK Government, the goal has been set that by 2021 the UK will be:

“… secure and resilient to cyber threats, prosperous and confident in the digital world.”

The public sector holds large quantities of sensitive data, and it is important that moving forward in the current climate all public sector bodies possess the knowledge and ability to defend themselves against cyber threats, which means investing greater security into the supply chain.

Being certified compliant with Cyber Essentials is just as important to the public sector as it is to the private sector as it demonstrates to your clients, stakeholders and partners that your organisation holds itself to a high standard of cyber security in accordance with the UK’s National Cyber Security Programme.

If your organisation hasn’t already joined the Cyber Essentials scheme, then now is the time to do so.
