The NHM’s Technology Solutions department, part of Corporate Services, comprises ~50 staff that provide first to third line support of the Museum’s myriad business systems and supporting IT infrastructure as well as project management and business analyst resources to help coordinate business change involving technology.
The NHM has committed to digitising its collection; 20 million specimens over the next 10 years, with far reaching consequences for the underlying technology infrastructure required to support the activities and resultant data. Estimates are that by 2016 the NHM will be producing 10TB data per week, increasing to 20TB per week in 2017. This digitisation data, as well as our general corporate data, requires resilient storage and protection in an efficient, cost effective manner. To achieve this, the NHM currently utilises IBM TSM, disk to disk to tape backup, as well as HSM, utilising tape as primary storage media, to manage the data cost effectively.
The TSM environment at the NHM is comprised of 2 TSM servers, SAN storage and an IBM TS3500 Tape library. Licensing is part owned and part delivered through a managed service.
NHM are seeking an IBM data protection specialist who can provide and manage the TSM solution as well as providing strategic advice on how best to manage data protection, in a cost effective way, making best of use of technology changes.
