The Natural History Museum’s Imaging and Analysis Centre currently operates two X-ray CT scanning instruments:
•Nikon HMX ST 225 system offering reflection and transmission modes with a maximum sample capacity of 25cm (diameter) x 70cm (height) and 10kg (weight). This system offers a resolution of 5-125µm in reflection mode and 2-5µm in transmission mode. The reflection mode can be operated using a range of targets; tungsten, copper, molybdenum and silver.
•Zeiss Xradia Versa 520 with 14 position autoloader offering a range of energy from 30 to 160kV, a maximum sample capacity of ~5cm (diameter) x ~10cm in height. The recorded pixel size ranges from 40 to 0.1 µm. The system is equipped with 4 lenses to adjust optical magnification (0.4x, 4x, 20x and 20x) and a 14 position sample autoloader.
This tender is for replacement of the Nikon micro-Computed Tomography scanner (X-ray µ-CT) to complement the existing instrumentation (Zeiss Versa). The new system will be housed in the purpose-built instrument room currently occupied by the Nikon system and alongside the micro-CT visualization suite which houses nine high-performance computers used for data analysis and visualization.

Scope of the tender
The tender is for the supply of the X-ray µ-CT system described in the Technical Specification, together with any computing equipment required for data capture and reconstruction. Suppliers should also consider that the NHM, as a world-renowned institute for non-destructive imaging and analysis in the fields of earth and planetary sciences, taxonomy and biosciences, is also interested in opportunities for research collaboration (see Scope for Collaboration) with instrument manufacturers.
