Notice Summary
Title: Museum of London: West Smithfield International Design Competition
Notice type: Contract Notice
Authority: Museum of London
Nature of contract: Services
Procedure: Restricted
Short Description: The Museum of London is seeking to appoint a Lead Designer to provide architectural design services for its proposed new museum at West Smithfield. The site at West Smithfield is located in the City of London and covers approximately 25,000 sq m. The site includes the now disused General Market and the Fish Market, the triangular Red House, and the basement of the listed 1960s Poultry Market. This unique project – reimagining a nationally significant landmark – requires an outstanding and inspired Architect. The museum seeks a designer who deeply connects with the project, conceptualises a modern experience within this significant heritage ensemble, and will be dedicated in working with the museum to define its brief. To achieve this, the museum is conducting a two-stage, international design competition. The first stage is an international call for participation, appealing to Architects with relevant experience who identify with the project’s values and are dedicated to its resolution. From these responses a shortlist of at least five will be selected and asked to produce a design approach at stage two. The winner is expected to be announced in summer 2016. The construction budget will be in the range of £130 – £150 million. The project is planned for completion in 2021. The appointed Architect will lead and coordinate the work packages of a number of direct appointments by the museum, and act as Principal Designer for the project under the Construction and Design Management Regulations 2015.
