The site is and has been subject to instability for geological time. Events during the twentieth century have resulted in loss of properties and highway infrastructure. The site has been subject to mining for coal, ironstone and clay, until the mid 20th century. The site currently comprises areas of agricultural land, river and riverbank, self set woodland, residential and commercial property, tourist venues and facilities, a church, local infrastructure and areas of public open space. The community is served by a single carriageway road which traverses the full length of the site. Vehicular access is to be maintained throughout the works.
