Characteristic patterns of DNA methylation of CpG islands in the genome are key features in various paediatric and adult solid tumours.
The Illumina iScan is the only scanning platform which allows genome-wide methylation studies using the Infinium Methylation EPIC BeadChip.
The Illumina 850k EPIC array assesses the DNA methylation status of a small proportion of the 850,000 individual CpG sites on the array.
Illumina 850k CytoSNP BeadChips require use of either NextSeq 500/550 or iScan scanners – no other scanners will work with the BeadChips
An algorithm, developed at the DKFZ in Heidelberg, Germany, is able to distinguish brain tumour entities based on their methylation profile using this platform (Capper et al. Nature. 2018 March 22; 555(7697): 469–474).
This internationally recognised classifier is necessary to deliver accurate diagnosis for paediatric and adult tumours within the Yorkshire and North East GLH region through the new National Genomic Test Directory.
