Short Description: Barra Head Lighthouse is situated on the southernmost island in the Outer Hebrides, the Island of Berneray, at the southern entrance to the Minch. The light is at a position of 56° 47.1’ North, 07° 39.2’ West. The primary means of access to Barra Head Lighthouse is by helicopter, which is a 45 minute flight from NLB Oban, or 20 minutes flying from Benbecula Airport. There is a boat landing on the island although it is in poor condition and its location makes it extremely exposed to the Atlantic swell and strong tidal stream. It cannot therefore be relied upon for safe access and NLB helicopter will be used as the sole form of access throughout the project. The light is accessed by helicopter, with a designated landing area to the centre of the island. Site Visit - A site visit is scheduled for Thursday 6 June 2019. Attendees will meet at Oban Depot at 08:00 hours for the helicopter.
