4. Description: Services provided by individual artists. Services provided by authors, composers, sculptors, entertainers and other individual artists. The LLDC is looking to appoint an artist or arts organisation to develop an engaging and insightful community arts project in East London, as part of the celebrations of the centenary of women’s suffrage in Britain.
East London was a key site in the history of industrialisation, the labour movement, and the movement for women’s rights in Britain. But what is the legacy of these experiences? Has the right to vote led to political participation and action? What are the defining issues that shape women’s lives in east London today? What does work mean to East Londoners today? How should work ‘work’?
The overarching aim of this creative community engagement brief is to deliver a high quality, thoughtful, and inspiring arts engagement project, which makes east London residents interpreters and agents of their neighbourhood’s history and present, as well as making them active partners with cultural institutions at the Waterfront. It is envisaged that this project will be launched as part of a planned CED co-curated event about the suffrage centenary and women’s rights in July 2018.
The project should culminate in a creative ‘product’ or output.
